I bring to my writing a passion for intelligent journalism, and a respect for people's stories.
My experience in a variety of contexts - including freelancing, editorial, two-way photojournalism and full-time reporting - pushes me to produce tight, engaging writing in a style that is both thoughtful and creative.
Working full-time at a weekly newspaper, the award-winning Gulf Islands Driftwood, for example, pushed me to produce timely news and feature stories under deadline, to generate fresh story ideas, and to work with an editorial team.
Writing freelance for publications such as the University of Victoria Martlet, the United Church Observer, Geez Magazine, and the Anglican Journal, require researching stories of interest to the publications' audience while addressing the 'big picture.' This experience, particularly overseas, has built a foundation of independence and reliability in my work.
Finally, as staff editor of a refugee newsletter, the Three Braid Cord, I have the chance to work in all areas of the publishing process, from design and research to writing and copy-editing. In 2001, I was also published in an anthology of creative non-fiction relating to globalization and its responses.
I studied professional writing and political science at the University of Victoria.
